Concert:
Casino Ballroom, Lord Street, Leigh, Lancashire
Not a part of the Helen Shapiro tour. George Harrison's 20th birthday.
"I was actually there on the night, having arrived at about 9.15pm after attending an evening class at Leigh Tech. Parked coaches lined Lord St and Silk Street in front of the entrance. It was jam packed with people (mainly girls) who had arrived without a ticket and couldn't get in, Peter Hume and Vinnie Hilton were the doormen on the night and were standing behind the locked glass entrance doors. I had to squeeze through the crowd of screaming girls to the front (what an ordeal but it had to done!) - so that Peter and Vinnie could see my ticket pressed against the glass - I didn't let anyone else see it in case it was torn from my grasp - Peter indicated (with a sideways glance and a slight turn of his head) that I should go to the stage door at the rear of the building where they let me in (very quickly).
Inside, the ballroom was completely packed with fans hanging over the balcony and crushed on the dance floor right up to the stage. Most of the girls were screaming so loudly that the Beatles had to turn their amplifiers to the highest level in order that their music could be heard!
The band had been on stage for a while by then so I missed part of their show but I still remember hearing them sing 'Please Please Me' and Paul McCartney thanking everyone for helping them get it to Number One.

"Georgie Fame in 2003: 'I went home to Leigh in 1963 and one of my friends, who I used to play with in The Dominoes said you've got to come around to The Casino because there's this band from Liverpool and they're tearing the place apart. And I went in and there were The Beatles. And all these girls were screaming... in my home town! I went back to London, and nobody had ever heard of them. (laughter) But then soon enough, this whole avalanche came and the whole group scene started'."
